European Jules Verne Convention 2020

Thursday, 30th April to Sunday, 3rd May 2020
Wetzlar (Germany), Turmstraße 20

The Phantastische Bibliothek Wetzlar (Wetzlar Library of the Fantastic) together with the Jules Verne Club Germany invites the European Jules Verne societies and the interested public to an international Jules Verne Convention: The convention will be both a multilingual literary conference and an opportunity to visit Wetzlar’s places of interest.

The Wetzlar Library of the Fantastic holds the largest collection of fantastic literature in Europe. After the acquisition of a huge specialized collection of books and other items last year, the Library of the Fantastic is the only German library that holds all German editions of the works of Jules Verne. Additionally, in cooperation with the German Jules Verne Club, the Library is assembling an archive of secondary sources about Jules Verne and his work.

Jules Verne enthusiasts are kindly asked to hand in proposals for conference papers: presentations should not be longer than 20 minutes and presented either in English or French. Translations of the abstracts will be provided in all languages of the participating Jules Verne societies.

Please submit abstracts of no more than 300 words, plus 50 word bios by 5th January 2020 to registration[at]

The projected sightseeing programme will comprise all Wetzlar sites related to Johann Wolfgang Goethe who lived in Wetzlar during 1772. This stay inspired his novella The Sorrows of Young Werther which turned out to be Europe’s first international bestseller. We will offer an opportunity to visit the Leica Gallery – the notorious Leica camera was invented and is still produced in Wetzlar. In addition, there will be the opportunity to go underground in an out-of-use iron mine and ride a miners’ train 500 feet below ground level.

Programme details will be finalised by the beginning of February 2020, which will facilitate broader publicity. You may find an up-to-date-version of the convention programme here.

There will be no conference fee for members of Jules Verne societies; the convention will be open to non-members as well, at a fee of EURO 30.00 (EURO 20.00 concessions).
